THE KIND NEIGHBOR
Miss Aggie
♣♣♣
With No Husband or Children
Mention is made of the kind neighbor as she had no children and no
husband to remember her. Neighbors and the people in Craighead was her family.
Looking back this lady only survived through the goodness of her heart. Hence,
In Loving Memory.
Agnes Jenkins was the
Austin's closest neighbor. She lived in a three rooms board house. The
house is now replaced by a much larger one.
Agnes was a very kind woman.
She was also a very poor widow who lived a healthy life until she was
one hundred and five years old. Her kindness surpassed any that had ever been
seen. She was one of the best cook ever. Her neighbors could smell her cooking
from a mile. Whenever she cooked, she would look to see which of
the Austin's children were outside playing and would call them and
give them dinner. If she ripens banana for sale, she would give the
children some of the ripe bananas without taking any money from them. She
would even call and give them money from the sale of her only livelihood.
Mercel always leave the house
early for work in the mornings and get home late in the evenings. He knew
nothing of her kindness to his children. Had he known, he would have objected
as his pride would have been crushed. Esmie knew that she was kind to the
children and she saw it only as a lonely old woman who did not have a family
and needed to be close to someone.
She did all her cooking and
washing until a few weeks before she died. She fell, broke her hip and ended up
in the hospital where a few weeks later she died. Esmie was there for her going
back and forth to the hospital. Her kindness paid off in the end.
She is mentioned her for the
simple reason that Mercel's children weren't allowed to go anywhere that it’s not
a close family's home, and it was against his rules to accept the kindness of
anyone in the district. His pride and his ego were as high as the blue mountain
peak.
Agnes had no biological
children. She outlived her husband and her immediate family, yet her kindness
to others kept her going.
