♣♣♣

These were the first two children for Mercel and Esmie. Times were not as easy for them as for the children  of later years. There were around when the couple first started their journey as husband and wife. "The days of the dried badoe". They were so proud of their father to know that he made it to where he had yam all four seasons of the year.

Icente's own words," As the first child,, when I look and see how many other children followed me, I knew that I had to make something of my self. I had to be a role model for the younger ones". - She was a registered nurse.

ICENTE AND MERVIN
First and Second Children
Lived in London and then
Moved to New York
Nurse and Contractor
Millicent Died 2003, Mervin Died 2004 and Icente 2006.

Icente was humorous and kind hear ted. She always cook a big pot of food just like someone that was living in Jamaica and all the siblings living in the US would come over for dinner every night. She was never thin skinned. Most of the jokes where about her when the siblings met and she was always in the middle laughing alongside them and adding more of her jokes about herself.

She had a weakness for kindness. If the shoemaker ask her for money she would give it without asking back for payment in return.  When her siblings moved from Jamaica to US, they had to put a lid on her kindness. They had to explain to her that sometimes if someone stop her on the street and ask for impossible favors she needed to learn to say no.

Mervin was like the father figure. He was just as kind as Icente, but only to his immediate family. He was smart enough to know his limits.  He was always willing to share his wisdom and his financial gains with his brothers and sisters. He was a very successful entrepreneur and at the top of the ladder he was always dragging up his brothers and sisters behind him. He taught them about motivation and taught them the knowledge and understanding of how to succeed. In the town of Mount Vernon, New York where he lived he was known by everyone to be the richest person from Jamaica living in that area. Known to be one of the first black man to drive a brand new Cadillac. Even though not the richest, but unknown to these people, he played the part and earned a lot of respect by doing so.

Both Icente and Mervin migrated to England when the rest of the siblings were younger but the way they lived in New York, it was impossible to tell that they were separated for any period of time.

Millicent Austin-Dixon was Mercel's first child but not Esmie's. He had this child before he moved to Craighead from Warsop.  She was 12 years younger than Esmie. Her mother was an older woman for Mercel. Mother Gail. She was of light complexion and the most beautiful of all Mercel's children. Even though her mother's complexion was very dark, she was the lightest in complexion of all Mercel's children. She was a business woman and owned her own bar. Prior to her death, she lived in Lacovia, St. Elizabeth. She love,"Mi Pa" as that was what she called him. However, during her last days, they were astray-ed.

SO LITTLE AND YET SO MUCH LOVE

When Mercel and Esmie had their first set of children, life was a lot simpler, yet they were very happy together as a couple. During the 50” s through the early 70” s, most Districts in Jamaica did not have electricity, running water or phones. Life was a lot less complicated and children were a lot happier. They played together and stayed together. Relationships were a lot more binding and respectful. When people died the body would stay no longer than two days before being buried. It took two days as the coffins had to be built by a district carpenter. At nights the body would be taken out of the house and put outside as it was much cooler. During the days, coffee would be burned underneath the bed to suppress the scent of the decomposition. Then in Craighead there was a town crier, Miss Larry, a poverty-stricken widow who was more than happy to get her payment from just being given a whole lot of coffee to drink. If someone in the District was terminally ill, a lot of
